A Roadmap through Azeroth at Level 60

    Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 10:17 PM [General]

So you've finally done it. You've reached level 60 in World of Warcraft. It's taken months, hundreds of quests, and thousands and thousands of dead monsters. But you've finally done it. You're level 60.So ... what now?For many players, reaching level 60 is actually the beginning of an all-new game within World of Warcraft. There's epic lewt to be won, bosses to be beaten, and raids to be, uh, raided. This content, however, can be an impenetrable maze of intersecting quests and raid instances. For someone who's just reached 60, simply figuring out where to start can be a daunting task. The chat channels in Ironforge and Orgrimmar are a nonstop flood of abbreviations and acronyms: "UBRS." "Scholo." "Strat." "DM." "LF3M BRD EMP RUN PST!" What does it all mean? What should you be doing first? That's where this guide comes in. It's not a step-by-step strategy guide; it's simply a roadmap, a "user's manual" to being level 60. On the following pages, you'll find a listing of just about every high-level quest chain in World of Warcraft, overviews of how the major raids work, and other diversions that level 60 players have been known to enjoy.Whether you've been level 60 for a day or raiding for months, hopefully this guide will take some of the mystery out of WoW's endgame content and help you enjoy life after 60. Happy Raiding! A Life on the Ocean Wave

Thursday, August 21, 2008, 04:15 AM GMT [Cycling]

The ancestors on my Dad’s side were well traveled, went all over the place they did, calming restless natives in the name of Empire. We didn’t get out so much though. Until I got on an Intercity 125 to Edinburgh at age 17 I hadn’t been further north than Birmingham and had only left fair England for a rain drenched two week jaunt into Wales.

I had to make do with seeking adventure in books, traveling to exotic countries or far off galaxies in my mind and being home in time for tea. One of the books which left an indelible mark was “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad. In the opening scene the sailors are gathered on deck in the evening waiting for the wind to pick up so they can head down the Thames to start their voyage. To pass the time, Marlow, one of the sailors, begins to tell a story about a voyage he took into the centre of Africa.

To have such a store of memories from your travels to the farthest reaches of the globe, to pass through barely explored regions seemed a romantic occupation, apart from the nasty diseases and stomach problems from eating the local food that is. But these days, you are even taking your chances in a takeway in Birmingham City Centre. But getting back on track, the idea of being a sailor nevertheless seemed a quixotic one.

Many years on, I have done a fair bit of traveling, maybe not to the darkest regions of the globe, but some places were certainly poorly lit. And I can claim some interesting experiences and take every opportunity to bore unwilling audiences with the details.

Last Saturday I was on the Star Ferry that runs between Hong Kong and Kowloon and en-route to the border of Mainland China. I found myself watching the sailors and began wondering about what stories they could tell. Did they go through years of maritime school, working their way up through the ranks until they got command of their own vessel puttering back and forth across the harbour? Or had they sailed the seven seas in an assortment of barely seaworthy crafts until one day, in a alcoholic blur, they ran aground their tanker on the shores of Alaska, decimating the local wildlife, and in shame they were relegated to able seaman on a local ferry.

In any other situation they might be able to regain some modicum of respect and standing among their fellow seamen by recounting their experiences Marlow style on such a summer evening. But of course time constraints would render it all but impossible. No sooner had they uttered a “aar me hearties, gather around and I’ll tell you a tale that will freeze the cockles of your heart” as they pulled out of Hong Kong, than they would be pulling into Kowloon to return to port and the spell would be broken.

It would be even worse if they had spent their entire career on the Star Ferry or the Isle of Wight “Wightlink” between Ryde and Portsmouth (although that can run to 20mins on a windy day it’s still not enough for a long drawn out yarn, and there is certainly no time for a spot of sodomy or a lick from the cat o nine tails to punish the miscreant mariner.) While they may be absent from the Channel, there may still be pirates offering adventure on the South China Sea but they probably restrict themselves to waters less well populated than Hong Kong Harbour. But every time they gathered around the captain in a quiet moment it would be the same f ucking story everytime: “Let me see lads…it was maybe 20 years ago now, and we were sailing from, now where was it, Hong Kong or Kowloon…?”

There would be no time for Spanish ladies either. It would be stretching credulity to head to a bar and trying to pick up a girl with a “Now me lovely, it’s been 30 minutes since I felt the touch of a woman” and “would she make a sailor happy just once before he heads back out to the open sea?”

Just A Little Bit Confused After S.S.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 11:12 PM EST [General]

First, let me just say that I like and respect Dave Batista. He gets the most out of his ability, and he's proven to be pretty durable for such a big wrestler. But, he's not on the level of Cena, Triple H, Michaels, Jericho, or even Randy Orton. How does John Cena win back to back 'Mania's over two of the best of all time: Triple H and Shawn Michaels, hold the WWE Championship for well over a year, and then lose to "The Animal" at this year's Summerslam? Pardon me if I'm not the least bit confused. Anyway, it's pretty obvious that these two will meet again, and hopefully the results will be different. Let me know what you think!

    Yours Truly,

Final week of the PBA Experience

    Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 10:11 PM [General]

In my best Howard Cosell imitation: "It ovah, it's alll ovaaahhh".  Scott is TKO'd by the PBA Experience in a 12-round (week) bout, where I'm a welterweight, and the PBA is George Foreman.

    Or something like that anyway.

Position night, final week, tonight.  Cheetah again.  The pattern does not like me. I do not like it right back.  Shot a couple of 130's games before coming back with a 182 to close out the night.

Finished up with a 36-game set with a 160 average. This, after booking a 201 this past winter on the house shot. HELLLOOOOOO reality.   I knew I wasn't going to put up big numbers, so I'm not shocked by this.

The good news is I learned a lot, had some fun too.  We finished 7th out of 10 in a pretty tightly contested league.

And I found out my winter league is going to be using a modified house shot that's more difficult, closer oil ratio to the pros, at least the first six weeks as a test, so I think I'll be better prepared for that as a result of this summer's festivities.  Of course, this means my average will take a hit, which is a bit disappointing since I'm trying to hit 210 this year, but at the end of the day, more practice on tougher shots, should make me a better bowler.

September 3rd it all kicks off, and suffice to say, I hope to not be mentioning anything about 130 games, or a 160 average, as the weather turns chilly :)

    Surviving

    Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 10:10 PM [General]

We all have to survive the everyday hassle of life and that is always hard because of bills, food and especially the cost of gas to be able to go to work. But they always have a foul since of humor when we least need it but they will always let the good come out when we need it the most when it seems the darkest.
We have survived past lives before even if we don't remember them..so just remember things will work out one way of the other but they always will.Just let whatever is going wrong work itself out cause we have really no control over what goes on in the cosmos in the big scheme of things.
So just let it all flow and run as it needs to and we will survive it all one day soon.

Blessed it be and always have fun

MEMORARE TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

    Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 10:03 PM [General]

MEMORARE TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, that in thy celestial apparitions on the mount of Tepeyac, thou didst promise to show thy compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting thee, seek thy help and call upon thee in their necessities and afflictions.

Thou didst promise to hearken to our supplications, to dry our tears and to give us consolation and relief. Never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, either for the common welfare, or in personal anxieties, was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Mary, ever Virgin Mother of the True God! Though grieving under the weight of our sins, we come to prostrate ourselves in thy august presence, certain that thou wilt deign to fulfill thy merciful promises. We are full of hope that, standing beneath thy shadow and protection, nothing will trouble or afflict us, nor need we fear illness, or misfortune, or any other sorrow.

Thou hast decided to remain with us through thy admirable image, thou who art our Mother, our health and our life. Placing ourselves beneath thy maternal gaze and having recourse to thee in all our necessities we need do nothing more. O Holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer us.
    [Here mention your petition.]

Five Hail Marys. . . in gratitude for the four apparitions to Juan Diego and the one to Juan Bernardino

    Confía en Mí...

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 11:02 PM EST [General]

    Christian Glitter by www.christianglitter.com

well today has been an exciting day.  i found out that i will be getting promoted to staff sergeant.  It's a pretty big accomplishment for someone in there first enlistment to do.  I couldnt wait to tell Natalie this morning when i found out.  I had my doubts about how well i scored but Natalie never did.  she knew that i would succeed at it, if i wanted it enough.  I am so thankful that she has so much faith in me.  I am a very luck man to have her in my life.  I cant wait for the time when we get to be with each other every day.  I love you babe!

    The Apple Argument For Abortion

    Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 10:00 PM [General]

    The Apple Argument Against Abortion

Source: December 2000 issue of Crisis MagazineExternal link (opens new window)

I doubt there are many readers of this magazine who are pro-choice. Why, then, do I write an argument against abortion for its readers? Why preach to the choir?

Preaching to the choir is a legitimate enterprise. Scripture calls it "edification," or "building up." It is what priests, ministers, rabbis, and mullahs try to do once every week. We all need to clean and improve our apologetic weapons periodically; and this argument is the most effective one I know for actual use in dialogue with intelligent pro-choicers.I will be as upfront as possible.

I will try to prove the simple, common-sensical reasonableness of the pro-life case by a sort of Socratic logic. My conclusion is that Roe v. Wade must be overturned, and my fundamental reason for this is not only because of what abortion is but because we all know what abortion is.

This is obviously a controversial conclusion, and initially unacceptable to all pro-choicers. So, my starting point must be noncontroversial. It is this: We know what an apple is. I will try to persuade you that if we know what an apple is, Roe v. Wade must be overthrown, and that if you want to defend Roe, you will probably want to deny that we know what an apple is.

    1. We Know What an Apple Is

Our first principle should be as undeniable as possible, for arguments usually go back to their first principles. If we find our first premise to be a stone wall that cannot be knocked down when we back up against it, our argument will be strong. Tradition states and common sense dictates our premise that we know what an apple is. Almost no one doubted this, until quite recently. Even now, only philosophers, scholars, "experts," media mavens, professors, journalists, and mind-molders dare to claim that we do not know what an apple is.

    2. We Really Know What an Apple Really Is

From the premise that "we know what an apple is," I move to a second principle that is only an explication of the meaning of the first: that we really know what an apple really is. If this is denied, our first principle is refuted. It becomes, "We know, but not really, what an apple is, but not really." Step 2 says only, "Let us not 'nuance' Step 1 out of existence!"

    3. We Really Know What Some Things Really Are

From Step 2, I deduce the third principle, also as an immediate logical corollary, that we really know what some things (other things than apples) really are. This follows if we only add the minor premise that an apple is another thing.

This third principle, of course, is the repudiation of skepticism. The secret has been out since Socrates that skepticism is logically self-contradictory. To say "I do not know" is to say "I know I do not know." Socrates's wisdom was not skepticism. He was not the only man in the world who knew that he did not know. He had knowledge; he did not claim to have wisdom. He knew he was not wise. That is a wholly different affair and is not self-contradictory. All forms of skepticism are logically self-contradictory, nuance as we will.

All talk about rights, about right and wrong, about justice, presupposes this principle that we really know what some things really are. We cannot argue about anything at all—anything real, as distinct from arguing about arguing, and about words, and attitudes—unless we accept this principle. We can talk about feelings without it, but we cannot talk about justice. We can have a reign of feelings—or a reign of terror—without it, but we cannot have a reign of law.

    4. We Know What Human Beings Are

Our fourth principle is that we know what we are. If we know what an apple is, surely we know what a human being is. For we aren't apples; we don't live as apples, we don't feel what apples feel (if anything). We don't experience the existence or growth or life of apples, yet we know what apples are. A fortiori, we know what we are, for we have "inside information," privileged information, more and better information.

We obviously do not have total, or even adequate, knowledge of ourselves, or of apples, or (if we listen to Aquinas) of even a flea. There is obviously more mystery in a human than in an apple, but there is also more knowledge. I repeat this point because I know it is often not understood: To claim that "we know what we are" is not to claim that we know all that we are, or even that we know adequately or completely or with full understanding anything at all of what we are. We are a living mystery, but we also know much of this mystery. Knowledge and mystery are no more incompatible than eating and hungering for more.

    5. We Have Human Rights Because We Are Human

The fifth principle is the indispensable, common-sensical basis for human rights: We have human rights because we are human beings.

We have not yet said what human beings are (e.g., do we have souls?), or what human rights are (e.g., do we have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"?), only the simple point that we have whatever human rights we have because we are whatever it is that makes us human.

This certainly sounds innocent enough, but it implies a general principle. Let's call that our sixth principle.
